Start with how you will use it. For daily carry, choose a light 2 fold or 3 fold. For heavy rain and wind, choose a straight or golf umbrella with more ribs. For travel, a 3 fold or capsule umbrella. For shade at a stall or garden, a garden umbrella on a stand.

A 2 fold folds once, so it is longer when closed but gives more cover and a sturdier frame. A 3 fold folds twice and fits office, college and hand bags more easily.

A full-length, non-folding umbrella. Its long shaft and bigger canopy make it sturdier in rain and wind than most folding umbrellas.

A straight umbrella with 12 or 16 ribs, a fiberglass-rib umbrella, or a 30 inch golf umbrella. More ribs and flexible ribs help the canopy keep its shape in gusts.

More ribs give a rounder, more evenly supported canopy, which helps in windy weather. 8 rib umbrellas are lighter and simpler.

Windproof umbrellas use flexible ribs and sometimes a double, vented canopy so gusts pass through instead of flipping the umbrella. They handle wind much better, but close any umbrella in very strong storms.

They close with the wet side folded inward, so less water drips on you, the car seat or the floor — handy when getting in and out of a car.

A 3 fold or a 5 fold capsule umbrella — light and small enough for a bag or pocket.

A mini 5 fold umbrella that packs into a capsule-shaped case, made to fit a handbag or pocket. It is best for light rain, sun and travel.

A large straight umbrella, about 30 inches, with an extra-large canopy that can cover two adults. It works as an everyday rain umbrella too, not only on the golf course.

J or C shaped (curved) handles are easy to grip and can hang on your arm; straight handles suit folding umbrellas. We also have wooden-handle umbrellas.

Tightly woven polyester and pongee canopies shed water well. Pongee feels softer and dries quickly.

Umbrellas are usually sold by rib length in inches (for example 21, 25 or 30 inch). For canopy cover, open the umbrella and measure across from tip to tip. Folding umbrellas also have a shorter folded length.

An umbrella with a silver or black coated canopy blocks far more sunlight and UV than a plain or light fabric. Look for UV protective canopies in the product details.

Yes — a rain umbrella with a silver or black coated canopy works well as a sun umbrella in summer.

A transparent umbrella keeps rain off and gives a clear view, but it lets sunlight through, so it gives little sun shade.

A black or silver coated umbrella gives the most shade. Light colours are fine in the rainy season.

Garden (pole) umbrellas give shade over stalls, carts and lawns. Patio umbrellas shade seating and dining areas at homes, cafés and resorts. Beach umbrellas are similar pole umbrellas made to be carried and fixed in sand.

A center pole umbrella stands in a base or through a table. A side pole (cantilever) umbrella hangs from a pole at the side, leaving the space underneath clear.

Stands are sold separately unless the product says so — see our stands & accessories. Larger umbrellas need a heavier base.

Use a stand or base that suits the umbrella size, fill water bases fully, and close the umbrella in strong wind or storms.

Yes — closing it at night and in wind protects the canopy and frame and makes it last longer.

Brush off dirt, wash the canopy with mild soap and water, rinse and let it dry fully open before closing it.
