Quick answer: A side pole umbrella — also called an offset or cantilever umbrella — has its pole at the side and the canopy hanging over your seating, so nothing blocks the table or loungers underneath. A square canopy covers square tables, corners and café rows more completely than a round one. Our umbrella price list shows current prices for the Square Side Pole Patio Umbrella and the larger Square Roman Cantilever. Always use a base heavy enough for the size and location.

How a side pole (offset) umbrella works

On a normal (center pole) umbrella, the pole runs through the middle of the shade — usually through a table hole. On a side pole umbrella, a strong upright pole stands beside the seating and an arm holds the canopy over it. The result: the whole shaded area is usable for tables, chairs, loungers or a play area.

Feature Side pole (offset) Center pole
Space under canopy Completely free Pole in the middle
Placement Beside tables, loungers, pools Through a table or on its own stand
Base Needs a heavier base (canopy hangs to one side) Lighter base possible

Why choose a square canopy?

  • Covers square and rectangular tables edge to edge — a round canopy leaves the corners in the sun.
  • Lines up neatly in rows along a café front or terrace edge.
  • Fits corners of balconies and courtyards.

Prefer an even circle of shade over round tables or loungers? See the round side pole umbrella guide.

Planning the spot: size, sun and wind

  1. Measure the seating area and add about 60 cm on each side so people stay shaded as the sun moves.
  2. Note the sun's path — place the pole on the side where the afternoon sun comes from, so the canopy leans into the shade you need.
  3. Check wind exposure — rooftops and open lawns need extra weight and quicker closing.
  4. Leave clearance for the arm and canopy to swing or tilt without hitting walls or lights.

Bases and stability

Because the canopy hangs to one side, a side pole umbrella puts more load on its base than a center pole umbrella. Use the base recommended for your umbrella's size, follow the product instructions, and close the umbrella whenever the wind picks up — extra weight is not a substitute for closing it. For smaller garden umbrellas, our stands range from the 3-leg stand to the Heavy 12 kg stand — check compatibility with your model.

For cafés, hotels and restaurants

  • More covers — no centre pole means tables can be arranged freely.
  • Branding — a printed canopy works as signage; ask us about logos on garden umbrellas (logo printing from 100 pcs on many models, depending on the umbrella).
  • Evening trade — the solar LED model adds light without wiring.
  • Uniform look — square canopies in one colour give a neat, premium frontage.

Daily use and care

  1. Close the umbrella at night and whenever wind picks up.
  2. Let the canopy dry before closing it for long periods to avoid mildew.
  3. Store or cover it during heavy monsoon storms and in the off-season.
  4. Clean the canopy with mild soapy water and a soft brush.

Frequently asked questions

What is a side pole umbrella?

An outdoor umbrella with the pole at one side (offset or cantilever), leaving the shaded area free of a central pole.

Square or round — which is better?

Square covers square tables and corners more completely; round gives an even circle of shade for round tables and loungers.

What is the price of a side pole umbrella?

See our umbrella price list for current prices of our square or round side pole patio umbrella, solar LED model and Roman cantilevers (round 10×10 ft and square).

What is a cantilever umbrella?

Another name for an offset umbrella — the canopy is supported by an arm from a side pole.

Does a side pole umbrella need a heavy base?

Yes — because the canopy hangs to one side, use a base suited to the size and add weight in windy places.

Can I put a logo on it?

Branding is possible on many garden umbrellas — send your logo and quantity for a quote.
