Quick answer: In umbrella fabric, 190T and 210T are thread counts: the number of threads in one square inch of canopy fabric, so 210T has a higher thread count than 190T. Smoothness, weight and water resistance also depend on the yarn, the weave and the finish. Umbrella pongee is usually a polyester fabric with a soft, matte feel; standard polyester takes bright colours and prints well, which is why it is widely used for promotional orders. Coatings matter as much as the weave: a silver UV lining on the underside is a popular choice for strong sun.

This guide is written for importers, distributors and promotional companies who need to specify a canopy fabric in a quotation request. Classic Umbrella has made umbrellas in India since 1990, and our range includes polyester canopies with UV protection, silver UV linings, 210T pongee and clear canopies.

What do 190T and 210T mean?

The "T" figure is a thread count: the number of warp and weft threads woven into one square inch of fabric. A higher count means more threads in the same area. It often goes with a smoother, more closely woven fabric, but the count alone does not decide quality.

Two things the T number does not tell you: the yarn’s linear mass (measured in denier, written as D, such as 150D or 210D on bags and outdoor gear), and what coating has been applied. Two 190T fabrics can perform quite differently depending on the finish, so always ask about the coating as well.

Thread count 190 threads per square inch 210 threads per square inch
Feel Light Usually smoother; depends on yarn and finish
Printing Prints bright, sharp logos and patterns Prints well; slightly richer, matte look
Typical use Promotional giveaways, everyday folding umbrellas, volume retail Premium straight and golf umbrellas, corporate gifts

Pongee vs polyester umbrella fabric: what is the difference?

The two names overlap: in the umbrella trade, pongee usually means a polyester fabric with a fine, even weave and a soft, matte feel, not the traditional silk pongee. Buyers associate it with premium umbrellas; how well it repels water depends on its construction and finish. Our Premium Windproof Classic Umbrella, for example, uses a 210T high-density pongee canopy on 16 fibreglass ribs.

Standard polyester is the workhorse fabric of the industry. It holds colour well, takes screen and digital printing cleanly and keeps the unit cost down, so most promotional and everyday retail umbrellas use it. Our range includes many polyester canopies with UV protection.

Nylon is light and strong for its weight, but it is less common in umbrellas than in outdoor clothing and tents. Some lightweight travel umbrellas use it; for most bulk umbrella orders, polyester or pongee is the practical choice.

Fabric Strengths Best for
Polyester (190T) Bright colours, sharp printing, economical Promotional umbrellas, giveaways, volume retail
Polyester pongee (thread count varies) Soft, matte feel Premium straight and golf umbrellas, corporate gifts
Nylon Very light, strong for its weight Lightweight travel umbrellas

Is umbrella fabric waterproof?

A good umbrella canopy keeps rain out through two things working together: a tight weave and a water-repellent finish that makes water bead and roll off instead of soaking in. That is why a new umbrella sheds water so cleanly. Over time and heavy use the finish wears, so care matters: open the umbrella to dry rather than storing it wet, and clean it with mild soap and water only.

If you import into the European Union, check the current rules on PFAS chemicals used in some water-repellent finishes, and state your requirement in your enquiry so the right finish is quoted.

UV coating and silver lining

Many of our umbrellas have a silver UV lining on the inside of the canopy, and buyers in hot, sunny markets such as the Middle East, Africa and Australia often choose them, because there an umbrella is used as much for sun as for rain. UV performance depends on the complete canopy specification.

If your market requires a tested UPF rating on the label, raise it in your enquiry before you confirm the order.

Frequently asked questions

Is 210T better than 190T?

210T has a higher thread count, and it is often chosen for premium umbrellas. But thread count alone does not decide quality: yarn, weave and finish matter too, so compare samples of the exact fabrics.

Is pongee waterproof?

Umbrella pongee is usually finished with a water-repellent coating so rain beads and runs off; how well it performs depends on the fabric and finish. Like any umbrella fabric, the finish lasts longer if the umbrella is dried open and cleaned gently.

Pongee or polyester for a logo umbrella?

Standard polyester takes bright colours and prints well, which suits giveaways. Choose pongee when the umbrella is a premium gift and the feel of the canopy matters. Confirm the print on a sample either way.

What is a silver UV lining?

A silver-coloured layer on the inside of the canopy, available on selected models and popular in sunny markets; confirm availability for your chosen model. UV performance depends on the complete canopy specification.

Can you match our brand colours?

Colour customisation can be discussed for bulk export orders. Send Pantone references with your enquiry and we will confirm what is possible for the model you choose.
